This year’s grades span the spectrum from head of the class to flunking out. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is at the bottom with a grade of “F,” singled out for its zeal in muzzling scientists and keeping critical research findings from Canadians.

Universal Periodic Review submission on the state of freedom of expression in Canada
Thursday, October 11, 2012In collaboration with other organizations across Canada, CJFE has contributed to creating a submission for Canada's appearance at the UN's Universal Periodic Review, where the country's human rights record will be evaluated.In collaboration with the Centre for Law and Democracy, the BC Freedom of Information and Privacy Association (FIPA), Lawyers' Rights Watch Canada (LRWC), and PEN Canada, CJFE has contributed to a submission that summarizes Canada’s record on free expression – one of our fundamental human rights, protected under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Annual Review of Free Expression in Canada to mark World Press Freedom Day 2013
TORONTO, April 25, 2013 - On May 3, 2013, World Press Freedom Day, Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) releases its 2012-13 Review of Free Expression in Canada. This is the fourth edition of the annual Review, an in-depth analysis of the state of free expression in Canada, and the only publication of its kind.

On May 2, 2013, CJFE will launch the publication of its annual Review of Free Expression in Canada with a salon-style conversation focusing on this hard won and frequently challenged Charter right. The evening will honour World Press Freedom Day on May 3, and will bring together a diversity of opinions and voices to speak about free expression and why it matters to all Canadians.
